    The 5C 6 and 5C 7 surveys of radio sources

    5C 6 and 5C 7 continue the series of deep surveys made at 408 and 1407 MHz with the One-Mile telescope at Cambridge. They were intended (1) to provide a sample of faint radio sources suitable for further study; (2) to improve the statistics of source counts N(S) and spectral-index distributions at low flux densities; (3) to study the isotropy of the distribution of faint sources. Each observed field is about 4° in diameter at 408 MHz and 1° in diameter at 1407 MHz, and the field-centres are a α = 02ʰ14ᔐ, Ύ = 32° (5C 6) and α = 08ᔏ17ᔐ, Ύ = 27° (5C 7). The synthesized beamwidths (FWHM) are 80 arcsec (408 MHz) and 23 arcsec (1407 MHz). The techniques of observation and data-analysis followed closely those used for 5C 5 (Pearson, T. J., 1975. Mon. Not. R. astr. Soc., 171, 475), with some minor variations which are noted in Section 2

    A New Component in the Radio Continua of PNe

    A byproduct of experiments designed to map the CMB is the recent detection of a new component of foreground galactic emission. The anomalous foreground at 10–30 GHz, unexplained by traditional emission mechanisms, correlates with 100 mum dust emission, and is thus presumably due to dust.Is the anomalous foreground ubiquitous in the Galaxy? I will present evidence obtained with the CBI and SIMBA+SEST supporting the existence of the new component in the ISM at large, and in specific objects, in the form of a 31 GHz excess over free-free emission in PNe

    Adaptive cancelation of self-generated sensory signals in a whisking robot

    Sensory signals are often caused by one's own active movements. This raises a problem of discriminating between self-generated sensory signals and signals generated by the external world. Such discrimination is of general importance for robotic systems, where operational robustness is dependent on the correct interpretation of sensory signals. Here, we investigate this problem in the context of a whiskered robot. The whisker sensory signal comprises two components: one due to contact with an object (externally generated) and another due to active movement of the whisker (self-generated). We propose a solution to this discrimination problem based on adaptive noise cancelation, where the robot learns to predict the sensory consequences of its own movements using an adaptive filter. The filter inputs (copy of motor commands) are transformed by Laguerre functions instead of the often-used tapped-delay line, which reduces model order and, therefore, computational complexity. Results from a contact-detection task demonstrate that false positives are significantly reduced using the proposed scheme

    Fast iterative solution of reaction-diffusion control problems arising from chemical processes

    PDE-constrained optimization problems, and the development of preconditioned iterative methods for the efficient solution of the arising matrix system, is a field of numerical analysis that has recently been attracting much attention. In this paper, we analyze and develop preconditioners for matrix systems that arise from the optimal control of reaction-diffusion equations, which themselves result from chemical processes. Important aspects in our solvers are saddle point theory, mass matrix representation and effective Schur complement approximation, as well as the outer (Newton) iteration to take account of the nonlinearity of the underlying PDEs

    Asking the experts : developing and validating parental diaries to assess children's minor injuries

    The methodological issues involved in parental reporting of events in children's everyday lives are discussed with reference to the development and validation of an incident diary, collecting concurrent data on minor injuries in a community study of children under eight years old. Eighty-two mothers participated in a comparison over nine days of daily telephone interviews and structured incident diaries. Telephone methods resulted in more missing data, and participants in both groups expressed a preference for the diary method. This diary was then validated on a sample of 56 preschool and school-aged children by comparing injury recording by a research health visitor with that of their mothers. Each failed to report some injuries, but there was good agreement overall, and in descriptive data on injuries reported by both. Parental diaries have the potential to provide rich data, of acceptable validity, on minor events in everyday life

    High-energy gamma-ray observations of the accreting black hole V404 Cygni during its June 2015 outburst

    We report on Fermi/Large Area Telescope observations of the accreting black hole low-mass X-ray binary V404 Cygni during its outburst in June-July 2015. Detailed analyses reveal a possible excess of γ\gamma-ray emission on 26 June 2015, with a very soft spectrum above 100100 MeV, at a position consistent with the direction of V404 Cyg (within the 95%95\% confidence region and a chance probability of 4×10−44 \times 10^{-4}). This emission cannot be associated with any previously-known Fermi source. Its temporal coincidence with the brightest radio and hard X-ray flare in the lightcurve of V404 Cyg, at the end of the main active phase of its outburst, strengthens the association with V404 Cyg. If the γ\gamma-ray emission is associated with V404 Cyg, the simultaneous detection of 511 511\,keV annihilation emission by INTEGRAL requires that the high-energy γ\gamma rays originate away from the corona, possibly in a Blandford-Znajek jet. The data give support to models involving a magnetically-arrested disk where a bright γ\gamma-ray jet can re-form after the occurrence of a major transient ejection seen in the radio.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
